Steel Buildings in Farm Country
Pole barn and ag building insulation is a big part of the work in Lancaster County. The countryside here is farm country, with many Amish and Old Order Mennonite families around towns like Ephrata, and steel pole buildings serve as shops, machine sheds, equipment storage and small manufacturing spaces. Many owners eventually want to heat one, or at least stop the steel from dripping on equipment.
Why steel drips
Steel cools fast at night and in winter. When warm, moist air from people, animals, heaters or a wet floor touches the cold metal, water condenses on it and drips. In a shop that means rust on tools and wet floors. Closed-cell spray foam sprayed directly on the steel stops that air from touching the metal, insulates it, and adds a vapor retarder in the same layer.
How thick
Thickness depends on what the building is for. An unheated machine shed may need only a thin layer to stop condensation. A heated shop needs more for real R-value. HomeGuide lists closed-cell at R-5 to R-7 per inch. We ask how you will use and heat the building, then quote a thickness for walls and roof separately.
Open-cell in steel buildings?
Open-cell foam is cheaper per inch but absorbs moisture and does not stop vapor, so we rarely use it directly on steel. In some heated buildings with a separate interior finish and vapor control, it can be part of the plan.
Codes and rebates
Agricultural buildings and shops can be treated differently under building codes than houses, depending on use. Check with your township before converting a building to heated workspace or living space. PPL's current insulation rebate form excludes workshops, garages and outbuildings, so plan on no utility rebate for a barn or shop.
Protecting the foam
Some uses, especially with animals, livestock or heavy equipment, call for a coating or liner over the foam. We talk through that before quoting.

Pole Barn & Ag Building Insulation Questions
Will spray foam stop my pole barn from dripping?
Yes. Closed-cell foam on the steel keeps warm, moist air off the cold metal, which is what causes the drip.
How thick should foam be in a heated shop?
It depends on how warm you keep it and how you heat it. We quote walls and roof separately once we know the use.
Can you spray foam over existing fiberglass blanket?
Usually the old blanket should come out, especially if it is torn or wet, so foam bonds to the steel.
Do rebates cover barns?
PPL's current insulation rebate form excludes workshops, garages and outbuildings.
