Old Houses on the River

Spray Foam Insulation in Columbia often involves some of the county's older homes. The town began as Wright's Ferry, founded in 1726 by English Quakers led by John Wright, and the first commercial crossing of the Susquehanna in the region. Susanna Wright's house, Wright's Ferry Mansion, dates to 1738 and is the oldest standing house in town. Samuel Wright laid out 160 building lots in 1788, and Columbia incorporated as a borough in 1814.

River town houses

Many Columbia homes are older brick and frame houses on stone or brick foundations, close to the river. They share the common issues of older housing: bare rim joists, attics with thin mixed insulation, and walls with little or none.

Moisture first

Houses near the river and on lower streets can have damp basements. Before we insulate any foundation wall, we look for water and suggest fixing it first. Closed-cell foam on the rim joist above is usually safe to do regardless.

Masonry

Solid brick and stone walls need to dry, so we do not spray foam directly on them. We put our effort into attics, rims and framed walls.

Size

Columbia had 10,222 residents at the 2020 census. It sits on the east bank of the Susquehanna across from Wrightsville and York County.

Rentals and twins

Many older river towns have a mix of owner-occupied homes, twins and rentals. For shared-wall houses, we insulate your side and check the shared attic for gaps.
